With the advantages of safety, high energy density, high recyclability, low cost, green and environmental protection, solid-state batteries stand out in the battle of new power batteries, and become the next generation technology route direction for car companies to bet, favor capital, and compete in the layout of the battery industry chain. At the same time, restricted by equipment and manufacturing process, the market is more focused on the commercial application of solid-state batteries.

Car companies bet

In 2022, the news of car companies betting on solid-state batteries continued to spread.

On April 12, Honda Motor released its latest initiatives in the field of pure electric vehicles. In order to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 through a wide range of products and enterprise activities, in the second half of 2020, Honda will accelerate the independent research and development of a new generation of batteries, and plans to invest about 43billion yen to build a demonstration production line for all solid state batteries currently under development, which will be launched in the spring of 2024. After completion and operation, it is planned to be used in the models launched in the second half of 2020.

On April 11, Nissan officially announced the pilot production facility for laminated soft packaged all solid state battery cells, which is located in the Nissan Automotive Research Center in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The project aims to further promote the development and application of all solid state batteries. In the "Nissan 2030 vision", Nissan plans to build a solid-state battery pilot plant in Yokohama, Japan, by fiscal 2024. By fiscal year 2026, a total of 2trillion yen (about 112.8 billion yuan) will be invested to accelerate the transformation of electric technology. At the same time, Nissan plans to achieve mass production of solid-state batteries in fiscal year 2028, and launch the first electric vehicle equipped with original all solid-state batteries in the same year.

On March 6, BMW rarely put forward its own views on the power exchange technology, believing that the power exchange technology route is a waste of time, and BMW is more in pursuit of solid-state battery technology.

On February 1, Mercedes Benz signed a technical cooperation agreement with prologium, a solid-state battery enterprise in Taiwan, China, to jointly develop the next generation battery, with an investment amount of millions of euros. The first vehicle equipped with a new solid-state battery is expected to be launched in the next few years, and will be equipped with a series of passenger cars in the next five years.

In addition, Dongfeng, Weilai, SAIC, BAIC, great wall, Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, stellantis, general motors, Hyundai and many other domestic and foreign automobile enterprises have increased their scale to layout solid-state batteries.

Capital preference

In addition to the car companies' bet, since this year, a number of domestic and foreign enterprises in the solid-state battery industry chain have successively won the favor of capital.

On April 24, according to the news released by langu new energy, a high-tech enterprise of new electrolyte materials, in February this year, Haisong capital, together with Jingneng technology, the master fund for achievement transformation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiuzhi capital, Huangcheng prime minister's office and other well-known investment institutions and enterprises, signed a series a equity investment agreement with langu new energy. The capital delivery has been completed recently, with an investment amount of nearly 200million yuan.

On March 24, industrial and commercial changes took place in Wei Lan new energy, adding several shareholders such as Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Fund partnership (limited partnership), Huawei affiliated Shenzhen Hubble technology investment partnership (limited partnership), and Ningbo Geely blue plan enterprise management partnership. The registered capital of the company increased from 58.0368 million yuan to 61.3673 million yuan.

On March 14, high energy times announced that it had recently completed financing of more than 50million yuan. The current round of financing is led by Tongchuang Weiye, and the investors also include CICC Chuanyu Phoenix fund, Xinwangda, Zhuhai high tech venture capital and other institutions. The financing will be mainly used to accelerate the product layout, technology research and development, talent introduction, etc. of all solid state batteries in the high energy era. On March 8, country garden venture capital announced that recently, Tailan New Energy announced the completion of the a+round of financing, which was invested exclusively by Country Garden venture capital. This round of financing will be used for production line construction, product R&D and talent building.

On February 10, enli power (including enpower's solid-state battery companies in China, Japan and the United States) announced that it had completed a round of financing of more than 100 million yuan. This round of financing was led by micro light venture capital, followed by Borun capital, yuannuotech, Lvdong capital and potential energy capital.

On February 3, SES issued a US $275million additional issue of pipe at the price of US $10.00 per share, with investors including Honda Motor, general motors, Hyundai Motor, Geely Holding Group, Kia, SAIC, etc.

On January 21, American solid-state battery start-up factorial Energy announced that it had obtained a round D financing of 200million US dollars. The leading investors were Mercedes Benz and stellantis group.

Industrial acceleration

On April 22, the Ministry of economy, industry and trade of Japan said that Japan would fully commercialize all solid state batteries by 2030. With car companies' bets and capital preference, the market is more focused on when to get on the bus.

It can be seen that most enterprises are expected to start producing all solid state batteries in 2024 or 2025.

Evtank, a research institution, predicts that the worldwide shipment of solid-state batteries may reach 276.8gwh in 2030, and the overall penetration rate is expected to remain about 10%.

In order to seize the technological commanding heights of the next generation of battery materials, battery material enterprises such as rongbai technology, dangsheng technology, Shanshan shares, Enjie shares, Tianci materials, Jiangsu Cathay Pacific, and greenmead have also accelerated the R&D and production of solid-state battery related materials. Among them, on April 26, rongbai technology received an order for solid lithium battery cathode materials from Weilan new energy, with a supply of more than 30000 tons in four years.

The technological innovation of power battery is accelerating, focusing on safety, increasing energy and reducing costs will become the general direction, while the solid-state battery is expected to accelerate the loading under the efforts of the industrial chain.
